Low-energy pion-photon reactions and chiral symmetry

Norbert Kaiser (TU München)

The talk reviews the description of low-energy pion Compton scattering π- γ → π- γ and pion-pair production π- γ → 3π at next-to-leading order in chiral perturbation theory.  The first process allows one to to extract the pion electric and magnetic polarizabilities, while the second reaction is governed by the chiral pion-pion interaction.  In addition to  the strong interaction effects from chiral loops and counterterms, the QED radiative corrections to these processes are also studied.  The predictions of chiral perturbation theory can be tested by the COMPASS experiment at CERN.
