Climate Change
R. Winkelmann (Potsdam)
The Earth's complex climate system composed of atmosphere, ocean, land and cryosphere is subject to natural variability as well as anthropogenic change. Future projections of the latter are highly dependent on greenhouse-gas emission pathways. Global sea-level is currently rising and different physical processes determine its future rate. Possible "tipping elements" such as the irreversible decline of the Greenland ice sheet or abrupt changes of ocean circulations are currently under research.
